What Is Power Yoga?

If you've never practiced "Power Yoga" you're probably wondering, what is it?

The term Power Yoga was coined over 20 years ago by world renowned yoga teacher, Bryan Kest. He states, Power Yoga = Empowering yoga practice and that in general the objective of this practice is wellness. Going on to state that the difference from other yoga practices is “nothing and everything.”

Kest explains, "Empowering meaning aware, awake, mentally strong, centered, stable within the vicissitudes (less reactive). Combined with a supple, toned, well oiled (blood flow) body that is very adaptable to the various physical demands of one’s life." For some an empowering practice may be a meditation practice, for others it’s a cardio based vinyasa flow. Ultimately, they are one and the same, yet there is a difference because of the uniqueness of each teacher.

To Byran, Power Yoga is a by-product of the evolution of teachings passed from one yoga student or instructor to another. In many ways, there is “no consistency in Power Yoga classes throughout the world” simply because the teachings have been passed on through a lineage of teachers that is uniquely personalized.

In the same regard, at The District Yoga, Power Yoga is a personalized asana practice that ebbs and flows between breath and movement, integrates longer held poses, all while aiming towards a more “awakened” state. We like this practice to challenge you in many ways. That might be through strength, cardio, flexibility, mobility or range of motion. In our library of Online Classes, you’ll find a bountiful mix to choose from.
